Installing Asphalt Shingles: 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid — 27 Comments

  1. The most common mistake is installing shingles in the first place, go to metal and you never touch it again, and it adds value to your home , people in the shingle industry never educate their customers on something better, like metal,  so scared to run out of work, well change is inevitable , all industries that accept change still do well.

  2. Schaper roofing would have do themselves a favor by watching these helpful videos. Our roof leaked from day one, and will still are having problems 6 months after a new roof was installed. A state licensed a contractor, but not it's employees. The contractor can sit back and do nothing, while Schaper roofing's unqualified workers tear your world up. Shitty shape shitty shape shitty Schaper roofing. You get the roof, you get the leaks, but you don't get the fix. Lyrics to a rookie level rap song I wrote in response to my own poor roofing job. Don't get burnt make sure you watch these so you know what the contractor should be doing.

  3. I would say he might know some things about roofing ,but if you have worked on roofs with people that have no money then his logic's are not the answer . if the roof needs tore off cut the tabs off and roof over them ,even if it is against the city ordinance to do so ,save on haul off dump fees and assholes . ya see I am roofer and people who run their mouths about broke people have no clues on how to help them . The easiest and fastest way to install a square roof is use gutter nails and put the whole bundle up at a time with one nail ,call your insurance company and draw your money four times then build a new home !!!! i am one badass roofer yes
I am . any questions ,just ask this pro !!!!! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha kiss my ass you freaks .

  4. Obviously this was made for people who dont know anything about roofing or arent roofers, I dont know what a 2/12 is or a 4/12 pitch. You have to explain it. Only came across this because I am working on a shed.

  5. Why not clearly demonstrate these mistakes showing us precisely what you are talking about versus just talking about them? You should have tools in hand illustrating your points.

  6. 8 nails per shingle!? Miami Dade code is one of the most stringent in the country and requires six. Point two, put bull around the pipe before adding the flashing, and don't ever use zak screws because the neoprene washer will fail due to UV Rays, use nails. Too long an overhang? Been roofing over 30yrs in seven different countries and no roofer would do that, period. Wrong racking? Oh please, show me your better way.

  7. These are common mistakes?  I've never considered any of these except the pipe flashing.  And when you screwed that in on top of the already done shingles, were you trying to show us how screws work….cause I would think the fact that you put that on top the shingles was some kind of joke.

  8. Thanks for the video!  I'm re-roofing a dog house & have never done roofing before.  What is the purpose of neoprene washers on some roofing nails, & are they useful – or a bad idea – when putting asphalt shingles onto plywood decking?

Also, I plan on putting a dab of silicone all-weather sealant over each galvanized, ribbed nail as I nail them in.  Is that a good idea?  Overkill?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

  9. My parents just had a roof replaced, when I look at part of the roof the shingles are slightly buckled in several places, they are saying that they will "lay down eventually". Material was GAF, is this true? confused

  10. Had roof installed 3 years ago. Roofer left almost 100 exposed nail heads. His response was this is "industry standard." Is he right? Many of the nails have started backing out as I suspected they would. I have covered the nail heads liberally with silicon caulk. Was this a poor quality installation? Also, only about 50% of drip gaurd was installed.
